Con Or Bust: Helping Fans of Color Attend SFF Cons

Offer: A rec list done to your prompt

I am offering: a rec set of fanworks to the prompt that you give. It will have at least four things in it and, judging from previous rec sets, may have as many as 8 or 15 or more. Your prompt can be as specific or as general as you like. (If I find it too restrictive or am otherwise having issues with it I'll let you know and we can take care of it somehow. If you'd like feedback or something with your prompt before you finalise it, that's fine too.) My recs comm is fish_recs if you'd like to get a better sense of things that I have recced in the past.

Fandoms: I read/listen/etc. things outside of these fandoms but these cover the majority of my fannish time.
  • Major fandoms (alphabetically): HP, Leverage, Merlin, Mythbusters, Psych, SGA, SPN, SPN RPF, Star Trek Reboot
  • Not-as-major fandoms (alphabetically): Bandom, Better Off Ted, Buffy/Angel-verse, Chuck, Doctor Who 'verse (incl. Torchwood), Firefly, folk tales, Smallville, Sports Night, White Collar, Vorkosigan 'verse, Wiseguy
  • Pro-fic: I am also willing to offer recs of pro-fic, either entire canons (e.g., shows, movies, books, book series) or specific episodes of a show or specific books from series. (In my book/TV readings I'm generally sci-fi/fantasy, if that helps.)

Timeline: You can give me the prompt however quickly or slowly you wish after the end of the auction. I will not likely have a quick turn-around time, but I absolutely promise that I will do this. Exactly how long will depend on how much rereading/hunting down fic/finding new fic/etc I have to do (plus on everything else which has an obligation on my time, sadly). FWIW, this would be my second highest priority rec list, right after my help_haiti rec list (but the person who won my offer there hasn't yet given me a prompt yet, so...).

Lunch at WisCon: Enjoy a private lunch at WisCon with me, at the local restaurant of your choice, my treat. (You pay for your own alcohol, though, should you choose to partake.) We can discuss whatever you like -- writing, publishing, erotica, polyamory, teaching, academia, kids, race/ethnicity, etc. and so on. It could be a focused topic, or just a free-range discussion. Bonus: If you like, my sweetie, Strange Horizons (http://www.strangehorizons.com) senior fiction editor Jed Hartman (http://www.kith.org/logos/), will join us. But that's entirely optional.

Oh, and you can bring a friend or more than one if you like; I'll just be paying for one person's meal, though! :-)

Curry powder and cookbook, made by Guest of Honor Mary Anne Mohanraj (born in Sri Lanka): One large jar of Sri Lankan curry powder, freshly hand-roasted and ground by yours truly, accompanied by a signed copy of my Sri Lankan cookbook, A Taste of Serendib. I'll either bring them to WisCon or mail them to you, your choice.

The curry powder works great as an easy, mildly-spicy rub for roast or grilled meats, and of course, for cooking curries. It's traditionally used for meat or fish recipes, but I've successfully used it with seitan in the past, if you prefer vegetarian options. I think small cubes of baked tofu would work too.

Item Name & Description: WordPress website design and launch, includes original art provided by me, fanart, your own or other art (subject to permission by the artist). Use it to blog or just to tell your visitors about you and what you’re doing (great for artists, authors, or anyone with a passion they want to share with the world). You provide the content—as much as you want—and I’ll put up the first 3 pages, edit any images you want to include if necessary, and make it shine, then show you how to blog or add other content if you want more. Designs will be created based on your interests, passion, needs, and to take into account your aesthetic. Content must be provided before the launch.

Starting Bid: $150.00

Notes: Approximate retail value: $350-$500.00

The website must be built on WordPress, a powerful blogging and content management software. It may contain no more than 3 template pages (that means three distinctly different page layouts within the overall design, but when you’re entering the content, you can use any of the three as many times as you like). Basic SEO (search engine optimization) includes an XML sitemap and notification of Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

The design must be approved within 30 days from the date it is provided to you. The site launch must be scheduled within 90 days of design approval. If you don’t like the first design, we’ll tweak or start over once. If you're not ready to launch within 90 days of design approval, site launch may be delayed to fit the designer’s schedule. Once the site is launched, you’ll have an additional 30 days to ask for minor changes to functionality or design in order to make it run as smoothly as possible for you.

Ecommerce capabilities, social network creation, ecommerce design, Flash, multiple rotating banners, advertisement banner creation, high resolution graphics for print (business cards, letterhead), and additional SEO management not included.

This auction item includes one year of domain name registration and hosting. Light maintenance and minor edits are included during the hosting period. Once the design is completed, the site is your responsibility.

If the site is not launched because you are unable to provide content, or for some other reason that is your responsibility, the design you approved (if you approved one) is yours and will be provided to you in a zipped file.

Any issues you may face regarding your content, site visitors, permissions, privacy, or other content related problems, or any other issue not related to providing a design and uploading it to your website are not in any way related to this auction posting, and the designer takes no responsibility, express or implied, other than to provide a working design based on the software available at the time the design was created. No warranties, express or implied, are provided regarding the fitness of the design for anything other than the software for which it was created at the time of creation.

OFFER: Fiction or Creative Nonfiction Book Critique with Guest of Honor Mohanraj

I'm offering a close reading and 3-5 pages of typed response to your book-length creative work. (NOTE: Need not be finished yet, see below.) Or, if you prefer a verbal response to a typed one, I'm happy to do an hour of conversation about the book, by phone or Skype or in person (at WisCon or in Chicago). I'm willing to read a collection of short fiction, a novel (or novella), or a creative nonfiction work.

I'm experienced reading and critiquing in fantasy, dark fantasy, space opera, social science fiction, regular science fiction (if it's not super-techie), erotica, mainstream lit, historical, mystery, suspense, travel narratives, memoir, and YA. I read widely, and love work in all of those genres. I'm not terribly experienced in critiquing romance, but am willing to give it a shot; I do like some romance, such as Jennifer Cruisie's work. I know almost nothing about Westerns, spy novels, or thrillers, and gory horror gives me nightmares, so I'm probably not your best choice for those genres. Still, I'll take a stab if that's what you've got.

Credentials: I've been teaching fiction writing since 2001, and hold both an MFA and a Ph.D. in creative writing. I've taught creative writing at the Clarion workshop, the University of Utah, Vermont College, Roosevelt University, Northwestern University, the University of Ilinois, and the Asian American Writers Workshop. I'm the author or editor of ten books total, and have been published by Random House, Penguin, and HarperCollins, along with a host of small presses and magazines. Among the books I've edited is Aqua Erotica, which has published over 100,000 copies. Among the books I've written is Bodies in Motion, which has been translated into six languages.

Street value: Hard to say, but to take a semester long fiction class with me at UIC currently costs about $750 for in-state tuition, $1500 for out of state. That usually involves me critiquing two of your stories, but does of course also include some hours of craft lectures and time reading / jointly critiquing other students' stories.

More about me: www.mamohanraj.com

Manuscript due: Anytime between now and one year from now, so say March 1, 2011. And if win the bid, but you're only partway through and want to show me the first chapter or three and have a preliminary conversation about how the book is going and where it's heading, that's fine too. We can fold that in.

Minimum bid: $100
