Offer: blog post

Item Name & Description: A blog post at my blog of at least 1000 words. This can be me rambling on some topic you'd be interested in, a book/manga/anime/tv/movie review, or whatever else you can think of that I can write (not fic). I'm also willing to read a book/watch a movie and write it up, although check with me first to see if I have access to the media in question and if it's an OK length (ten hours or ~1000 pages tops, and that will take a while). I'm also willing to do the first volume or episode of a series.

You can also make me write up something that's been sitting in my queue for a while, such as a giant post on Amy Tan, Joy Luck Club, and Saving Face; food and food shame and "exoticness;" Chinese as my mother tongue; etc.

Starting Bid: $1. If bidding goes above $50, I'll do two posts for the top two bidders.

Notes: 2 months after the bidder has decided on a topic. 6 months (or depending on the media) if I'm reading/watching something I haven't read or watched before.

(no subject)

Item Name & Description: A signed and doodled (if desired) copy of The House of Discarded Dreams, my latest novel, and an ARC of my forthcoming one, Heart of Iron (expected in August 2011).

Publisher's description of HoDD: "Trying to escape her embarrassing immigrant mother, Vimbai moves into a dilapidated house in the dunes... and discovers that one of her new roommates has a pocket universe instead of hair, there's a psychic energy baby living in the telephone wires, and her dead Zimbabwean grandmother is doing dishes in the kitchen. When the house gets lost at sea and creatures of African urban legends all but take it over, Vimbai turns to horseshoe crabs in the ocean to ask for their help in getting home to New Jersey."

HoI: "In a Russia where the Decembrists' rebellion was successful and the Trans-Siberian railroad was
completed before 1854, Sasha Trubetskaya wants nothing more than to have a decent debut ball in St.
Petersburg. But her aunt's feud with the emperor lands Sasha at university, where she becomes one of
its first female students—an experiment, she suspects, designed more to prove female unsuitability for
such pursuits than offer them education. The pressure intensifies when Sasha's only friends—Chinese
students—start disappearing, and she begins to realize that her new British companion, Jack, has bigger
secrets than she can imagine.

Sasha and Jack find themselves trying to stop a war brewing between the three empires. The only
place they can turn to for help is the Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace, newly founded by the Taiping
rebels. Pursued by the terrifying Dame Florence Nightingale of the British Secret Service, Sasha and
Jack escape across Siberia via train to China. Sasha discovers that Jack is not quite the person she
thought he was...but then again, neither is she."
Starting Bid: $25 for the pair

Notes: will ship anywhere as soon as the ARCs are available

Middle Earth Roleplaying Modules (two - originals, in shrink wrap)

Item Name & Description: The following two original Iron Crown Enterprises roleplaying booklets, each containing several adventures. Although these were written to be played with MERP and Rolemaster, critics writing at the time of publication noted that they could be adapted for other systems. ICE had the license for J.R.R. Tolkien's work at that time. If the winner desires, they can be signed by the author (me), although this will mean that the shrink wrap will be broached ... .

  • Pirates of Pelargir, published 1987, 32 pp. Note: the people of the Haradwaith in this volume are basically generic Western fiction Arabs with the serial numbers barely filed off ... I hope I know better now.

  • Haunted Ruins of the Dunlendings, published 1985, 30 pp.

Starting Bid: $20 for both.

Notes: Good for either roleplayers or JRRT completists. I will pay postage (that includes non-U.S.).

Offer: Copy of Steam-Powered: Lesbian Steampunk Stories + Artwork by Shweta Narayan

Item Name & Description: Copy of Steam-Powered: Lesbian Steampunk Stories, as well as a collaboration between two Nebula-Nominated authors: a piece of original Mughal-style art by shweta_narayan, conceived of as a fragment of a diplomatic missive from the Padishah Begum of Shweta's Steam-Powered story to the ruler of the alternate-world Syria featured in mine. Soon to be incorporated into it is a poem of Shweta's (in the Padishah Begum's voice) translated to Arabic by my father.

Starting Bid: $30

Notes: The painting is digitally produced, but Shweta will be hand-assembling the following into a final product:

- printout of the picture + inner ornate borders
- printouts of the poem as three different stanzas-in-boxes
- outer paper, with hand-done ornate border for the rest to be assembled on.

The copy of Steam-Powered will be shipped by JoSelle Vanderhooft.

Here's a low-res version of the image, presently without poem or borders:

You can see a Table of Contents for the book here, read N. K. Jemisin's story here, or listen to my story here, to get a taste of what's between the covers.

E-mail: For image, shweta at shwetanarayan dot org; for book, upstart dot crow at gmail dot com.

EDITED TO ADD! If the bidding reaches $150, Shweta will post the (freakin' AWESOME) poem in English, complete with pedantic Syrian scholar footnotes! If it doesn't reach $150, you'll only get the footnotes. :p

FURTHER... If you're very VERY keen and the bidding reaches $200, I will write my [presently unnamed] Syrian Ruler's poem in response to Jahanara's, and post it publically for free. I will write it out by hand, seal it with wax, and mail it to the auction winner as well.

ETA 2: Bidding's hit $150! Here, as promised, is the English version of Shweta's imaginary Urdu poem, complete with footnotes!

Bidding is now open and ends Sunday, March 6, 2011, at 11:59 p.m. EST (GMT -5).

Offer: Blog Post on a subject of your choice

I am offering a blog post that the winner can suggest the theme or subject for. This could be a commentary about a book or vid or movie, a meditation about a concept or term in anti-oppression theories, a rec list, or something else you might want me to blather about.
I will try to make it at least 1,000 words long, and will work with you to make sure it's something I can write about, and something you want to read about.

Depending on what the topic is, it might take me a while to write the post; but I will have it up before Wiscon 2011. You can read my previous posts over on my blog - [personal profile] deepad.

Starting Bid: $1.

Note: If the bidding goes over $50, then I will write a post for all the people who have bid over that amount in incremental bids of at least $5 above the previous one.
Contact me via deepad AT dreamwidth DOT org
Bidding starts Monday, February 21, 2011, at 12:01 a.m. EST (GMT -5) and ends Sunday, March 6, 2011, at 11:59 p.m. EST.

(Edited to add the incremental bid clause.:))
