Bidding now live (and more auctions still coming!)

Originally published at Con or Bust by Kate Nepveu. Please comment there ( comment(s)).

Bidding is now live on Con or Bust’s annual online auction, which raises funds to help fans of color/non-white fans attend SFF cons. All you have to do is leave a comment on the auction offer you’re interested in before bidding closes, on Sunday, February 24 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. (You may also want to subscribe to comments so you’ll know if you are outbid.)

There are already lots of great offers; you can search the site over in the sidebar, or browse the auction tags or the filterable Google Docs index. And there will be more offers posted, so keep checking back. Right now I have about 20 offers to post on behalf of others, and people have promised many more.

Which is to say: it’s not too late to offer things for auction, so please do! Last year we raised about $11,500 from the auction, which funded 28 different trips to cons over twelve months. To keep that going, we need all the auction offers we can get! You can submit an auction offer through a simple web form—no login required—and I’ll even host your pictures for you if necessary.

Learn more about Con or Bust, or leave a comment with questions. Thanks, and please spread the word!

More John M. Ford books

Originally published at Con or Bust by Dan B.. Please comment there ( comment(s)).

Item Name & Description: The John M. Ford collection Kate posted is excellent and you should bid on it. But you need to own more than just that book. Here are three of his novels:

  • The Dragon Waiting. This is my personal favorite of his novels. Here is an excellent review of it. Here is another one, by Jo Walton. If those don’t convince you to read it, I don’t know what will. This is a mass-market paperback with an unlovely cover, but then this book has had bad luck with covers. The book is in decent shape, with very little spine creasing.
  • The Last Hot Time, which is set in a milieu much like Borderlands. This is a hardcover. The book itself is in fine shape other than remainder mark; the jacket has a lot of scuffing on the back but is otherwise OK.
  • How Much For Just the Planet?, which is an atypical Star Trek novel. No, more atypical than that. It’s a musical comedy. This is mass-market paperback in good condition.

Starting Bid: $10

Notes: I will mail these for free in the US but won’t mail them elsewhere (it would probably cost more than the books will go for – sorry!). I will mail them within a few days of receiving the donation notification.

Movie Review

Originally published at Con or Bust by Genevieve Valentine. Please comment there ( comment(s)).

Item Name & Description: Movie Review

I watch a lot of movies! Some of them are lovely installments in the ongoing pop-culture conversation of film, thoughtfully crafted and quietly touching. Many of them are just dreadful, and sometimes that’s more fun.

I write them up regularly on the Questionable Taste Theatre feature on my blog, and there are a surprising number of movies I see that I can’t even bring myself to talk about there. (Remember that Snow White-for-kids movie where the jester was a deep-undercover prince for Snow White’s entire life so he could groom her from infancy to be his bride? I sure do!)

However, I will definitely talk about it, or many another bad movie, if you win this auction and tell me to.

Starting Bid: $20

Notes: I’ll watch a movie that’s several levels of bad, no problems. But there are some genres, particularly torture-porn horror, which are hard for me to review because I’m an enormous coward, and if you picked Hostel I would be reviewing it based only on the copy on the back of the DVD because scary is not my bag. There might also be some lurking dealbreakers (Sean Penn nooooo!). We’ll work it out.

FAIR COIN by E.C. Myers, signed by the author

Originally published at Con or Bust by ecmyers. Please comment there ( comment(s)).

Item Name & Description: Signed Hardcover of FAIR COIN by E.C. Myers

Starting Bid: $10

Notes: I will sign and personalize a hardcover copy of my young adult science fiction novel FAIR COIN, and ship it anywhere in the U.S. If you have an international address, you will receive a copy from Book Depository and I will mail a signed/personalized book plate separately.

About FAIR COIN:
Sixteen-year-old Ephraim Scott is horrified when he comes home from school and finds his mother unconscious at the kitchen table, clutching a bottle of pills. The reason for her suicide attempt is even more disturbing: she thought she’d identified Ephraim’s body at the hospital that day.

Among his dead double’s belongings, Ephraim finds a strange coin—a coin that grants wishes when he flips it. With a flick of his thumb, he can turn his alcoholic mother into a model parent and catch the eye of the girl he’s liked since second grade. But the coin doesn’t always change things for the better. And a bad flip can destroy other people’s lives as easily as it rebuilds his own.

The coin could give Ephraim everything he’s ever wanted—if he learns to control its power before his luck runs out.

Wardrobe refresher by Ekaterina Sedia (three available)

Originally published at Con or Bust by Kate Nepveu. Please comment there ( comment(s)).

Item Name & Description: Wardrobe Refresher

[Posted on behalf of the offeror.]

As some of you know, besides writing I enjoy fashion blogging, and am obsessive about following street style, finding new and strange places to shop, sustainable fashion, and vintage. And I love shopping for other people and making mood boards! So this is the offer: the winner will email me their needs and preferences as well as the budget, and in return you will get either a shopping list or a Pinterest board (your choice) of great items chosen from a variety of online retailers, from Etsy to indie boutiques to more mainstream retailers. I will custom-pick your pieces to suit your lifestyle, budgetary needs and ethical concerns, and in case of Pinterest board will also supplement it with styling suggestions and street style photos for inspiration. Whether you need a whole new wardrobe or just one thing for a special occasion, let me do the digging. All genders and sizes welcome!

Here is a pinterest board I did previously for someone who wanted some styling ideas on androgynous dressing and menswear, so it can give people some ideas regarding the end product.

Starting Bid: $50. Three available, top three consecutive bids win (edited for clarity 2013-02-23).
