Handspun, Handwoven Scarf

Originally published at Con or Bust by Susan Palwick. Please comment there ( comment(s)).

Item Name & Description: I will weave for you, from yarn I’ve spun myself, a scarf of roughly 7 inches by 72-90 inches, not including six-inch twisted fringe. I will work with you to design the scarf according to your specifications, especially in terms of color. However, it will have to be wool or a wool blend, and because I have a simple rigid-heddle loom, there are certain patterns I can’t weave.

Below are three photos to show you some of my work. The first is a log-cabin weave, a very popular pattern, woven from handspun.

The second is a lover’s-knot pattern, essentially a larger version of houndstooth (I prefer weaving houndstooth, but can do lover’s knot if you like it better). This particular scarf isn’t woven from handspun, but could be!

The third photo is a plainweave scarf woven from handspun, showing the natural variegation possible with handspun yarn. It can be lovely even without a pattern like the two above.

Other patterns (plaids, pick-up patterns, etc.) are possible, but I’m showing these to give you ideas!

Starting Bid: $50, plus shipping

Notes: I’m a college professor, so my time’s limited until May. It would ordinarily take me three weeks to a month to complete a project like this, but delays are not only possible but likely during the semester. I live in Reno, so if you’re in northern NV or CA, I may be able to deliver; heck, you can come to my house and watch me work!

Hand-Painted Bad Wolf T-Shirt

Originally published at Con or Bust by Mara H.. Please comment there ( comment(s)).

Item Name & Description: I will make you a hand-painted t-shirt of my TARDIS with Bad Wolf graffiti design, in white paint on a blue shirt. Your choice of adult “men’s” style cotton t-shirt size, up to 2X. I’ve included a picture of a finished t-shirt as an example; because the shirt is hand-painted, yours may look slightly different than the one pictured here. (If you do not want the splatter-painted effect, just let me know. I can do the shirt without it).

Red Plenty by Francis Spufford

Originally published at Con or Bust by Kate Nepveu. Please comment there ( comment(s)).

book cover Item Name & Description: Red Plenty by Francis Spufford (U.S. trade paperback).

Patrick Nielsen Hayden describes it as:

simply the most interesting non-fiction book I’ve read in years. It’s told in novelistic form, and it is the story of the generations of Soviet citizens — economists, planners, scientists — who believed, actually believed, in the idea that if they planned the USSR’s economy well enough, and got the math right enough, the horn-of-plenty would burst open and shower wealth upon the land. It’s absolutely riveting. . . . RED PLENTY delivers more pure science-fictional amazement than a dozen typical genre books. You can quote me on that.

The Wood-Gnome Book

Item Name & Description: This is an original hand-bound blank book, one of a kind. The design is inspired by characters and events in the Steerswoman Series.

The interior paper is handmade by me, from recycled materials.

wgb2

Although I treated the paper surface for writing and drawing, it’s very rough-textured and quirky. Works well with fountain pen and illustration pens, if you don’t mind a bumpy ride. Colored pencil uses the texture to good advantage. I have not tested for watercolor.

wgb3

I include extra loose scraps of the same paper, for you to test your inks, pens, watercolors or pencils.

The cover is textured art paper, trimmed with frayed silk ribbon and carved wooden beads. Endpapers are papyrus.

wgb5

Book size is 4.5 inches x 6 inches (11.43 cm x 15.24 cm)

I include with this book: a sheet of the same handmade paper, printed with a brief tale explaining why this is called the Wood-Gnome Book; and a copy of the British edition of The Steerswoman, in which we first meet the wood-gnomes.

wgb7

Starting bid: $25

Note: I will ship anywhere in the world. North America gets Priority Mail; other international will be via first class mail, which will take somewhat longer.
