Diana Wynne Jones’s The Tough Guide to Fantasyland and Grendal Briarton’s The Compleat Feghoot [note: image not available for fourth book in listing]
Item Name & Description: A varied assortment of humorous books:

  • The Tough Guide to Fantasyland by Diana Wynne Jones. This is a must-have if you have any interest in post-Tolkien fantasy at all. This is the original UK edition. It has some nicks and scratches but the inside is fine.
  • The Compleat Feghoot by “Grendal Briarton” (Reginald Bretnor). Feghoots are very short stories with outrageous pun endings. Light wear.
  • Dimensions of Sheckley by Robert Sheckley (natch). This is a NESFA Press omnibus of five of Sheckley’s novels; while he is better known for his short fiction these are well worth reading. The jacket has some minor dings, the book itself is fine.
  • Shaggy B.E.M. Stories edited by Mike Resnick. This was a humor anthology produced for Nolacon in 1988. It has a lot of stories, some of them minor classics. No picture is provided because it is missing the jacket and there’s not much to see.

Starting Bid: $10

Notes: I will mail these for free in the US but won’t mail them elsewhere (international shipping has just gotten too expensive). I will mail them within a few days of receiving the donation notification.

Four essay collections and memoirs
Judith Martin’s The Name on the White House Floor and Kate Wilhelm’s Storyteller
Calvin Trillin's Travels with Alice and Rachel Manija Brown's All the Fishes Come Home to Roost
Calvin Trillin’s Travels with Alice and Rachel Manija Brown’s All the Fishes Come Home to Roost

Item Name & Description: An assortment of non-fiction:

  • The Name on the White House Floor by Judith Martin, whom you may know better as Miss Manners. Before she started her etiquette column she wrote a more general column, sometimes about Washington life (spoiler: she did not like the Nixons much) but about other things as well (the column I just opened to is about how to write a crank letter). The book is somewhat shelf-cocked and the jacket has some wear but is intact.
  • Storyteller by Kate Wilhelm. As it says on the cover, this is a collection of essays about the Clarion workshops; some are about writing and some are about the workshops themselves. Excellent condition.
  • Travels With Alice by Calvin Trillin. This is a collection of humorous travel essays, and unlike many such these are actually funny. The boards are slightly warped but the book is fine otherwise.
  • All the Fishes Come Home to Roost by Rachel Manija Brown, a memoir of her life as a child on an ashram in India. Rachel is an excellent writer whom you should be reading. This is the paperback edition, in excellent shape aside from a slightly dinged corner and remainder mark.

Starting Bid: $15

Notes: I will mail these for free in the US but won’t mail them elsewhere (international shipping has just gotten too expensive). I will mail them within a few days of receiving the donation notification.

Miscellaneous books, lot 2 of N
James Blaylock’s Land of Dreams and The Last Coin, William Ashbless’s Pilot Light
Miscellaneous books, lot 2 of N
Stepan Chapman’s Troika and Gene Wolfe’s Peace

Item Name & Description: More miscellaneous fantasy books:

  • Land of Dreams by James Blaylock. 1st edition hardcover. The jacket has some scuffing and there’s a price written inside, but it’s nice otherwise.
  • The Last Coin by James Blaylock. 1st edition hardcover. This has very minor scuffing.
  • Pilot Light by “William Ashbless” (Blaylock and Tim Powers). Ashbless is a poet whom Blaylock and Powers use in some of their work. This is a little hardcover from Subterranean Press containing a story by Ashbless and an introduction and afterword explicitly by Powers and Blaylock. The jacket has some scratches.
  • Troika by Stepan Chapman. This is a surrealistic novel which won the Philip K. Dick Award in 1998. It was published by a small press (Ministry of Whimsy) and so is not that easy to find. This is a 1st printing and is in excellent condition.
  • Peace by Gene Wolfe, 1st edition hardcover. The jacket has a few marks and scratches (mostly on the back), there’s a price inside, and the top of the page block has discolored a bit with age, but overall it’s in nice shape.

Starting Bid: $20

Notes: I will mail these for free in the US but won’t mail them elsewhere (international shipping has just gotten too expensive). I will mail them within a few days of receiving the donation notification.

Little, Big first edition

Item Name & Description: A true first edition, first printing copy of John Crowley’s classic fantasy novel Little, Big. There was a hardcover published in the UK in 1982, but it was preceded by this Bantam trade paperback in 1981.

As you can see, the book is not in perfect condition. The covers have some edgewear and some nicks and scratches (although not as many marks as there appear to be, since some of the little white spots are dust under my scanner glass). The edges of the pages have darkened with age, which is typical for this book (the paper is not the best quality). The endpaper has a price and a bookstore stamp.

However, this is all making it sound worse than it is. The cover is not very worn, the spine is uncreased (as you can see), and aside from the endpaper the interior is free from stains, writing, tears, etc.

Originally published at Con or Bust by Kate Nepveu. Please comment there ( comment(s)).

Item Name & Description: A galley (advance reading copy) of The Memory of Water by Emmi Itäranta, donated by Harper Voyager.

The Memory of Water was originally published in Finland under the title Teemestarin kirja. It won the Kalevi Jäntti Literary Prize for young authors in 2012 and the the Young Aleksis Kivi Prize 2013 for the most outstanding Finnish work of fiction published in 2012. Itäranta wrote the full text in both Finnish and English; the English edition will be published on June 10, 2014.

Description:

An amazing, award-winning speculative fiction debut novel by a major new talent, in the vein of Ursula K. Le Guin.

Global warming has changed the world’s geography and its politics. Wars are waged over water, and China rules Europe, including the Scandinavian Union, which is occupied by the power state of New Qian. In this far north place, seventeen-year-old Noria Kaitio is learning to become a tea master like her father, a position that holds great responsibility and great secrets. Tea masters alone know the location of hidden water sources, including the natural spring that Noria’s father tends, which once provided water for her whole village.

But secrets do not stay hidden forever, and after her father’s death the army starts watching their town—and Noria. And as water becomes even scarcer, Noria must choose between safety and striking out, between knowledge and kinship.

Imaginative and engaging, lyrical and poignant, Memory of Water is an indelible novel that portrays a future that is all too possible.

book cover Item Name & Description: A galley (advance reading copy) of Thorn Jack by Katherine Harbour, donated by Harper Voyager.

Thorn Jack is a dark fantasy that will be released in hardcover on June 24, 2014. Description:

Combining the sorcery of The Night Circus with the malefic suspense of A Secret History, Thorn Jack is a spectacular, modern retelling of the ancient Scottish ballad, Tam Lin—a beguiling fusion of love, fantasy, and myth that echoes the imaginative artistry of the works of Neil Gaiman, Cassandra Clare, and Melissa Marr.

In the wake of her older sister’s suicide, Finn Sullivan and her father move to a quaint town in upstate New York. Populated with socialites, hippies, and dramatic artists, every corner of this new place holds bright possibilities—and dark enigmas, including the devastatingly attractive Jack Fata, scion of one of the town’s most powerful families.

As she begins to settle in, Finn discovers that beneath its pretty, placid surface, the town and its denizens—especially the Fata family—wield an irresistible charm and dangerous power, a tempting and terrifying blend of good and evil, magic and mystery, that holds dangerous consequences for an innocent and curious girl like Finn.

To free herself and save her beloved Jack, Finn must confront the fearsome Fata family . . . a battle that will lead to shocking secrets about her sister’s death.
