Hesperidean Cider in Fallen London

kate_nepveu wrote in con_or_bust

Originally published at Con or Bust by Kate Nepveu. Please comment there ( comment(s)).

golden appleItem Name & Description: A bottle of Fallen London‘s Hesperidean Cider, donated by Failbetter Games.

Fallen London is a free browser role-playing game set in an alternate Victorian-Gothic underworld, where three decades ago, London was stolen by bats and dragged deep into the earth by the Echo Bazaar. Many things are different now, including death itself . . . but once you die in Fallen London, you can never return to the surface. Unless you have a rare flask of Hesperidean Cider, perhaps.

Hesperidean Cider may just be the secret to immortality, and it’s the most expensive item in Fallen London. Though it’s been in the game from the earliest days, only one person has a bottle, as a reward for a pledge of $500 in the Silver Tree Kickstarter.

This is the chance for one lucky soul to acquire a bottle of this miraculous drink. Your Fallen London character will acquire a bottle of Hesperidean Cider. With it in your possession you need never fear Death again — waltz from the Boatman’s clutches and back to Fallen London in a single action! Are your friends suffering from wounds? Then invite them over for a tipple! See their injuries miraculously close!

Be the talk of the Fifth City. Be only the second Hesperidean.

Starting Bid: $100.

Bidding will open Monday, February 10, 2014 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern (GMT -5); it closes Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. More Information.

Item Name & Description: SF and Fantasy Workshop newsletters, issues from Feb. 1997 to Mar. 1998. These contains articles for sf/f writers on everything from critiques to writing horses to naming characters. The market news is obviously of no more use (unless you have a historical interest, I suppose) but the articles may be fun to peruse. These are black-and-white printouts or photocopies (I’m not sure which), used, but still in readable condition.

Starting Bid: $5

Notes: Shipping is on me within the USA, but only within the USA.

Korean Star Wars movie flyer from 1997

Originally published at Con or Bust by Yoon Ha Lee. Please comment there ( comment(s)).

Item Name & Description: This is some kind of flyer/brochure (?) handed out when I went to see the Star Wars trilogy remake (?) in 1997 in Seoul, Korea. (Sorry, I am not a movie person.) It’s a little dinged at the edges and corners, having survived moves every few years since 1997. On the other hand, hey, how many people do you know who have a Star Wars flyer in Korean? In full color? It’s four pages (basically, a single sheet folded in half).

No translation available for the Korean, sorry. I am not fluent in the language.

Starting Bid: $10

Notes: Shipping is on me anywhere in the world. I mean, it’s basically a folded sheet.

Item Name & Description: In 2007 venerable genre magazine Weird Tales underwent a major revamp under the leadership of Stephen H. Miscellaneous books, lot 3 of N

Item Name & Description: Four more books that have little to do with each other:

  • The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric & Discredited Diseases edited by Jeff VanderMeer and Mark Roberts. This is an anthology of descriptions of imaginary diseases by a whole bunch of writers: Neil Gaiman, Kage Baker, China Miéville, etc. Trade hardcover edition, in fine shape.
  • Vurt by Jeff Noon. Unread, in excellent condition.
  • Flux by Stephen Baxter. This is an SFBC edition, but that happens to be the first and only US hardcover edition (there was an earlier UK hardcover). The jacket has minor wear.
  • H.M.S. Surprise by Patrick O’Brian. As far as I can tell, this is a first US hardcover: it’s from Lippincott and has no date other than 1973. This would be worth quite a bit if not for the fact that it doesn’t have a jacket and the boards have some edgewear and stains, as you can see. The boards are also a bit warped. However, aside from a very faint stain on the front endpapers the interior is clean and bright.

A Spider Robinson lot

kate_nepveu wrote in con_or_bust

Originally published at Con or Bust by Dan B.. Please comment there ( comment(s)).

Item Name & Description: Three books written or edited by Spider Robinson:

  • The Best of All Possible Worlds, which is an unusual anthology. Spider chose his favorite stories from several authors, and then asked each of those authors to choose one of their favorite stories by someone else to accompany it. Spider wrote introductions for the stories he chose and each of the other authors (except Heinlein, who was recovering from surgery) wrote an introduction for the story they chose. E.g., Spider chose a scene from The Princess Bride, William Goldman chose Sheckley’s “The Seventh Victim” and introduces it.

The book has some wear and spine creasing but is intact. This goes for pretty high prices for a mass-market paperback anthology, so I figure any copy is worthwhile.

  • True Minds, aka Author’s Choice Monthly #12 from Pulphouse. This is an anthology containing stories, poems, and one essay. The cover is browning around the edges (Pulphouse was not known for their excellent book construction) but the interior is fine.
  • Time Pressure, which is more or less a sequel to Mindkiller. Hardcover 1st edition, the jacket has some wear but the book is fine.
