The Steerswoman, by Rosemary Kirstein

Originally posted at Con or Bust by Rosemary Kirstein. All comments must be made there.

Item Name & Description: The Steerswoman, mass market paperback, British edition.

If you ask, she must answer. A steerswoman’s knowledge is shared with any who request it; no steerswoman may refuse a question, and no steerswoman may answer with anything but the truth. And if she asks, you must answer. It is the other side of tradition’s contract — and if you refuse the question, or lie, no steerswoman will ever again answer even your most casual question. And so, the steerswomen — always seeking, always investigating — have gathered more and more knowledge about the world they traveled, and they share that knowledge freely. Until the day that the steerswoman Rowan begins asking innocent questions about one small, lovely, inexplicable object… Her discoveries grow stranger and deeper, and more dangerous, until suddenly she finds she must flee or fight for her life. Or worse — lie. Because one kind of knowledge has always been denied the steerswomen: Magic.

“If you like science, and if you like watching someone work out mysteries, and if you like detailed weird alien worlds and human cultures, if really good prose appeals… you’re really in luck.” —- Jo Walton, Hugo and Nebula Awards winner, author of Among Others and My Real Children.

“[Kirstein] walks the tightrope between fantasy and science fiction with precision and grace… [her] compassion for even minor characters is evident on every page, and her prose is measured and alluring without being overworked.” — Damien Broderick & Paul Di Filippo, in Science Fiction: The 101 Best Novels 1985-2010

The Lost Steersman, by Rosemary Kirstein, with small handmade blank journal

Originally posted at Con or Bust by Rosemary Kirstein. All comments must be made there.

Item Name & Description: The Lost Steersman, Volume 3 of the Steerswoman Series, with accompanying handmade journal.

While I was writing The Lost Steersman I was also experimenting with paper-making and I recycled printed drafts of the book into handmade paper. I intentionally left fragments of text visible in the finished pages, as random decorative inclusions.

There are twenty pages to this little (4.5″ by 6″) book. The paper is rough, and works well with colored pencil, fountain pen, felt-tip pen (NOT ballpoint). I include two loose pages for you to experiment with.

Cover is marble paper, end-papers are bark paper. Silk ribbon tie closure, with gold-edged little snail shell.

Starting Bid: $15

Notes: I will ship anywhere in the world (however for destinations in the Southern Hemisphere I’ll use the least expensive shipping method, and it might take months for the item to reach you).

matching gift; auction updates

Originally posted at Con or Bust by Kate Nepveu. All comments must be made there.

Want to help fans of color/non-white fans attend SFF cons? The auction is happening now, of course (more on that in a moment), but if you don’t see anything that strikes your fancy, I have good news:

I’m excited to announce a matching gift of $250 from an anonymous donor, which will run until Monday, May 4, 2015! Any regular donation (not an auction payment or a T-shirt order) received from the time this post goes live will be matched until the gift of $250 is met. Donations of any amount are always welcome, but through May 4, they will be doubled!

(Or if you’d like to add to the matching gift itself, that would also be wonderful; email me at knepveu@steelypips.org to arrange it.)

You can donate with a PayPal account or a credit card (after you click the orange button below, click “Continue” on the left side of the screen, above the credit card logos). On the “review your donation” screen, please click “Add special instructions to the seller” and state that this is for the matching gift. (Soon there will be many, many auction payments to process and this will make bookkeeping immensely easier.)

In auction news, the Google Docs index has been updated to include high bids and number of bids. There are some great things, especially from early in the auction, that have no bids; sort the index and check it out! (The index is manually updated about once a day; check the bottom for the timestamp.)

And it’s not too late to contribute items to be auctioned! Crafts, food, books; it’s all welcome. You can post items through the end of the auction, Sunday, May 3, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. Eastern (time zone conversions, countdown), though of course items posted extremely close to the end of the auction might not get as much notice.

If you have questions, please check the Auction Information Page, and feel free to comment if your question remains unanswered. Thanks!

Custom chocolate order, your choice of flavor and shapes

Originally posted at Con or Bust by Ariel. All comments must be made there.

Item Name and Description: Custom chocolate order in one flavor of your choice: 80+ custom truffles, 3+ pounds of molded chocolates, 60 pieces of handmade chocolate-dipped marzipan… Your imagination is the only real limit.

I’m a small-scale, Massachusetts-licensed chocolatier who specializes in geeky chocolates. Want ginger scald truffles with spicy ginger and pear brandy inspired by the Lies of Locke Lamora? Done that. Chocolate daleks, R2D2s, giant dice? Done. I can do decorated chocolates; my Daleks are metallic and my solid two-pound Millennium Falcon is starship grey on a black cake board with white chocolate stars. I’ll even make custom molds for you, if you make it worth my time by donating a lot. (For context, I usually charge about $200 for a new mold design. Pay for someone’s entire con visit, and I’ll help you make your chocolate dreams come true.)

Flavor inspiration at my website, although I am always inventing new flavors and will be happy to work with you on new ideas; pictures of a few of my molded chocolates can be found here.

Starting Bid: $125

Notes: Due to weather constraints (aka chocolate melting during shipping) this item will be delivered in the fall or winter; exact dates are flexible, so if you want custom chocolates for Halloween or Thanksgiving or Christmas, that can be done. Summer orders are negotiable but will require additional payment to cover the much higher summer shipping expenses.
