SF or Fantasy Novel Critique from Yoon Ha Lee

Originally posted at Con or Bust by Yoon Ha Lee. All comments must be made there.

Item Name & Description:

I will critique a science fiction or fantasy novel manuscript of up to 150,000 words. This is a general critique rather than line editing (although I am likely to mark things I catch as I go, unless you tell me you don’t want me to). I strongly prefer to read a complete work rather than the beginning chunk of a longer one.

My story “Effigy Nights” was a World Fantasy finalist for Best Short Story in 2014. My works have appeared in Tor.com, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Clarkesworld, Lightspeed, and Beneath Ceaseless Skies, among other venues; my collection CONSERVATION OF SHADOWS came out from Prime Books in 2013, and my space opera novel NINEFOX GAMBIT is forthcoming from Solaris Books this June.

Starting Bid: $200.

Other Notes?

I need the manuscript within 30 days of the end of the auction (in other words, you should plan to have a complete manuscript ready). I will return the critique within 60 days of receiving the novel. I can read RTF or .doc files. I’m happy to send comments through Word’s Track Changes or in a separate email; we can also schedule a one-hour chat about your manuscript over Skype if you’d like. Time-zone-wise I’m in Louisiana, USA, CST, but my schedule is somewhat flexible.

Handmade Reversible/Adjustable Gray/Blue Sling-Bag

Originally posted at Con or Bust by Jaymee Goh. All comments must be made there.

Item Name & Description: Reversible, Adjustable Sling Bag, home-made, Gray/Blue

Made of two completely different fabric patterns & types: a silky blue with floral pattern, and a textured black-and-two-shades-of-gray (maybe it’s 3 shades of gray, definitely not 50) metallic acrylic. The seams are visible when the gray side is worn on the outside–that same fabric also serves as the straps. There is a feather stitch along the edges to reinforce the bag, and a bit of imperfect stitching here and there (because my sewing machine does not like thick layers).

9″ x 11″ x 2″ — I made this specifically to fit my 10″ x 6″ laptop and then some. You can adjust how high/low you want the bag to hang by knotting the straps to the appropriate height. The lowest it can go is about 30″ (with a few inches to spare the top after the knot). It’s machine-washable (and I’ll run it through again before I send it to you).

Starting Bid: $15

Shipping: Anywhere

Other Notes: I’ll ship this from California. If you buy this within Riverside County I can just hand deliver it. If it ever gets broken, you can send it back to me for repairs ^^

Handmade Reversible/Adjustable Red/Pink Slingbag

Originally posted at Con or Bust by Jaymee Goh. All comments must be made there.

Item Name & Description: Handmade Reversible/Adjustable Red/Pink Slingbag

This slingbag with adjustable straps is made of two different fabrics: red floral cotton print on one side, and a happy pink flannel on the other. When the pink is on the outside, the strapline is red, and vice versa.

There is a pocket on the outside under the flap, trimmed with a floral lace on the red, and a red-on-white on the pink (which admittedly does not lie flat very well, you might have to iron it if it bugs you). This means that there is a pocket both inside and outside, because you cannot have an overkill of pockets.

9″ X 11″ X 2″ — made to fit a small laptop/tablet and then some, plus with the pocket space you can add more stuff like keys and whatnot! The straps can be knotted up to a length of 21″ with a few more inches to spare.

Starting Bid: $15

Shipping: Shipping from California, to anywhere!

The Wild Hunt series by Elspeth Cooper(UK edition)

Originally posted at Con or Bust by Diana Pho. All comments must be made there.

Form 3 Entry 110 Fileupload 1Item Name & Description: The Wild Hunt series by Elspeth Cooper (UK edition), books 2 and 3.

In Trinity Rising, As Gair struggles with grief over the loss of the only home he had known, and his beloved, he is walking into a conflict that’s greater and more deadly than he or his mentor ever anticipated. A storm of unrest is spreading across the land and they are going to be caught up in it―at a moment when Gair’s hold on his magic, his greatest defense and most valuable tool, is starting to slip….

In Raven’s Shadow, Three moons are rising. They are rising over the snowy Archen Mountains, where Teia struggles through the high passes to carry her warning to the Empire: the Nimrothi war band is poised to invade and at their head stands Ytha. She means to release the Wild Hunt – and with it Maegern the Raven, the Keeper of the Dead. In the desert of Gimrael, the moons are rising over the fires of revolution – flames that have already robbed Gair of a friend and left him alone in a hostile city, unsure even if the Song is still his to command. He has one last duty to discharge, and then nothing will stand between him and his ultimate goal: vengeance. And in the Nordmen’s chilly halls, Savin plays out a game in which kings and chieftains and men are but pawns on a chessboard that spans the Veil itself. Three moons are rising. When the trinity is complete, the endgame will begin.

Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer (advanced reader's copy)

Mycroft Canner is a convict. For his crimes he is required, as is the custom of the 25th century, to wander the world being as useful as he can to all he meets. Carlyle Foster is a sensayer–a spiritual counselor in a world that has outlawed the public practice of religion, but which also knows that the inner lives of humans cannot be wished away.

The world into which Mycroft and Carlyle have been born is as strange to our 21st-century eyes as ours would be to a native of the 1500s. It is a hard-won utopia built on technologically-generated abundance, and also on complex and mandatory systems of labelling all public writing and speech. What seem to us normal gender distinctions are now distinctly taboo in most social situations. And most of the world’s population is affiliated with globe-girdling clans of the like-minded, whose endless economic and cultural competion is carefully managed by central planners of inestimable subtlety. To us it seems like a mad combination of heaven and hell. To them, it seems like normal life.

And in this world, Mycroft and Carlyle have stumbled on the wild card that may destablize the system: the boy Bridger, who can effortlessly make his wishes come true. Who can, it would seem, bring inanimate objects to life…

A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge (first edition)

Originally posted at Con or Bust by Diana Pho. All comments must be made there.

Form 3 Entry 112 Fileupload 1A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge (first edition)

A Fire Upon the Deep is the big, breakout book that fulfills the promise of Vinge’s career to date: a gripping tale of galactic war told on a cosmic scale.

Thousands of years hence, many races inhabit a universe where a mind’s potential is determined by its location in space, from superintelligent entities in the Transcend, to the limited minds of the Unthinking Depths, where only simple creatures and technology can function. Nobody knows what strange force partitioned space into these “regions of thought,” but when the warring Straumli realm use an ancient Transcendent artifact as a weapon, they unwittingly unleash an awesome power that destroys thousands of worlds and enslaves all natural and artificial intelligence.

Fleeing the threat, a family of scientists, including two children, are taken captive by the Tines, an alien race with a harsh medieval culture, and used as pawns in a ruthless power struggle. A rescue mission, not entirely composed of humans, must rescue the children-and a secret that may save the rest of interstellar civilization.

A Fire Upon The Deep is the winner of the 1993 Hugo Award for Best Novel.
