Tea and Advice with Rose Fox

Originally posted at Con or Bust by Rose Fox. All comments must be made there.

Item Name & Description: Publishers Weekly senior reviews editor Rose Fox will take you out for tea (or an equivalent beverage) and at least an hour of advice and conversation on anything related to publishing. (Top four bids all win!)

Rose will gladly share their expertise on topics including finding an agent, navigating trad publishing, self-publishing, crowdfunding, writing, revising, fixing story problems, assembling a collection or anthology, freelance writing and editing (within and outside of the genre), book reviewing, balancing a day job with creative work, organizing successful and safe conventions, and thriving within the publishing industry and SF/F community as a marginalized person.

In addition to writing and editing SF/F, horror, romance, and erotica book reviews for PW since 2002, Rose coedited the anthology Long Hidden, which was crowdfunded with a very successful Kickstarter and was a finalist for the Locus Award and World Fantasy Award. They spent many years as a freelance book editor and copy editor, working with indie authors and major nonfiction publishers. They were program chair of Readercon for three years and drafted Readercon’s extremely comprehensive current safety policy and procedures.

Rose lives in New York City and will be at Readercon in 2016 and 2017 and WaveCon in 2017. Face-to-face tea dates can happen at any of these places. If you live elsewhere or can’t do an in-person tea date for any reason, virtual tea dates over text chat or video chat can be arranged.

Starting Bid: $50

Other Notes: Rose is queer, genderqueer, Jewish, and eager to support marginalized people within SF/F, especially people of color, people with low incomes, people early in their writing/editing careers, and young people, so the starting bid is low and the top four bids will win. If bidding goes over $100 but is still within your budget, please consider gifting this opportunity to someone who would greatly benefit from it but has limited funds.

Bidding opens on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern (time zone conversions). It will close on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. (time zone conversions, countdown) unless bids are received in the last ten minutes (learn more).

Name a character in a work by Naomi Novik

Name a character in a work by Naomi Novik:

Want your name immortalized? I’m offering a Tuckerization, where I’ll use your name (or the name of your choice) for a character in a story or novel! You’ll also get a free signed copy whenever the work is published.

There are a few caveats: I get to decide what work it appears in (if you have a favorite universe I write in, you can let me know, but no promises), and I may need to slightly alter your name to fit it into the voice and setting of the novel or story in question.

On the flip side, you get to approve the final form before it goes to publication, and if you care what the character is like (eg, anything from you don’t want to “play” a villain to you would like the character’s racial or gender identity to match your own, again within the constraints of the universe), let me know and I will do my best to accommodate.

Starting Bid: $20

Shipping: anywhere in the world the USPS ships (although recipient may be responsible for customs fees or something similar)

Other Notes: I can’t offer any guarantee on delivery time whatsoever! I’ll get your name into one of the next three things I write professionally after the auction close.

Original Flash Fiction, Written to a Starting Prompt of Your Choice, Or About Any of My Characters, Of Your Choice

I’ll happily write a flash fiction piece (between 500-1,000 words) for you, starting with a prompt/theme of your choice, or about any of the characters from my books. I’ll email it to you afterwards and you’ll have it all to yourself for a month. Afterwards, I may post the story online on my blog or website for other people to read, but I will credit you in my notes when I post it, and I will not offer it anywhere for sale.

If you wish, I can also mail you a printed and signed version of the story.

Starting Bid: $15

Other Notes: Will be delivered within 1 month of receiving the starting prompt/theme/character choice
