SFF Characters of Color Faceoff: soliciting nominations

The Second Annual SFF Characters of Color Faceoff will take place at WisCon's Gathering in, eep, less than two weeks. So it's time to solicit nominations!

In comments, please nominate awesome characters of color in science fiction and fantasy. As last year, multiple nominations from the same fandom are fine. However, unless someone has a really compelling reason otherwise, we're going to retire last year's winner (Zoe Washburn from Firefly).

If we get more nominations than 32 or 64, we'll winnow them down by a poll, so to make our lives easier, please list your nominees in the following format:

Name -- Fandom (Medium, if necessary to distinguish)

For example:

Katara -- Avatar: The Last Airbender (series)
Susannah Dean -- Dark Tower series by Stephen King
Stephen Black -- Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke
Lan Fan -- Fullmetal Alchemist (manga)

Go forth and nominate!

PS: feel free to make your case for your nominees here, or you can wait until the winnowing poll or a post specifically for that.

ETA: nominations closed! Please go vote for the round of 32!

Pepper - Tobias Buckell's Raga/Satrapy books (Crystal Rain, Ragamuffin, Sly Mongoose)

The author has decreed these to be the Xenowealth Series, fwiw.

I knew there was a name he'd given them. Thanks.

Yeine from NK Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms.

Besides the above four

Peter Grant -- Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch
Teyla Emmagan -- Stargate Atlantis
Ronon Dex -- Stargate Altantis
Wendy Watson -- The Middleman (TV)
Lal -- The Innkeeper's Song by Peter Beagle
Mai -- Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV)

Edited at 2011-05-15 01:14 am (UTC)

Yeine -- The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin
Oree -- The Broken Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin
Bonnie Torres -- The PSI series by Laura Anne Gilman
Morpheus -- The Matrix (movie)
The Oracle -- The Matrix (movie)
Croggon Hainey -- Clementine by Cherie Priest
Inspector Lady Wilhelmina "Mina" Wentworth -- The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook

Katara -- Avatar: The Last Airbender (series)

Ged -- Wizard of Earthsea &c. (books)

It may be an interesting arguing point whether he qualifies, since pretty much everyone around him is pretty much the same sort of color, but that color is dark.

I consider that it would be perverse to disqualify characters who are fortunate enough to exist in a milieu where they are not minorities.

I can't get to WisCon this year (sadness!), but here's my two cents from superhero comics (or should that be five cents?):

Ororo Munroe/Storm -- X-Men (comics/616)
Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle -- Blue Beetle v3 (comics)
Virgil Hawkins/Static -- Static Shock (series)
Rene Montoya -- Gotham Central
Cassandra Cain/Batgirl -- Batgirl

Oh hey comics! <3

Amanda Waller -- DC Universe at large (comics)
Vixen -- JLA (comics)
Monica Rambeau (previously Captain Marvel/Photon) -- Avengers, NextWave (comics)
Nico Minoru -- Runaways (comics)
Maggie -- Love and Rockets (comics)
Hopey -- Love and Rockets (comics)
Dust - New X-Men (comics)
Cyborg - DC Universe at large (comics)
John Stewart -- Green Lantern (comics)
War Machine - Iron Man/Avengers (comics)
Agent 355 -- Y: the Last Man (comics)
Darwin -- X-Men (comics)

...I'mma sit down now.
